YOUNG ENGINEERS PARTICIPATE IN TECH FEST 2019 JR UNIVERSITY, RANCHI

The science club of JRU organized a Tech Fest 2019 on 15 September at the University Ranchi campus to encourage young engineers to think out of the box and to honour the contributions of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

India celebrates 15 September as National Engineers’ Day to appreciate the contributions of Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.

Visvesvaraya is known for his contributions in the field of engineering. He installed an irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune to raise the flood supply level and storage to the highest levels. Later, this system was also installed at Gwalior’s Tigra Dam and Mysuru’s Krishnaraja Sagara (KRS) dam. KRS created one of the largest reservoirs in Asia at the time.

He served as the Diwan of Mysore and was awarded the title of ‘Knight’ in 1915 as commander of the British Indian empire. He received the Bharat Ratna in 1955 and became a member of the London Institution of Civil Engineers before he was awarded a fellowship by the Indian Institute of Science (IISC) Bangalore.

The Tech Fest 2019 at JRU was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Dr Savita Sengar. During her speech, Dr Sengar reminded students of the invaluable contributions made by M Visvesvaraya.

Dr Segar added, “Tech Fest is an opportunity for students to showcase their innovative ideas, besides keeping the spark of science alive. Students presenting science models also need to remember that they have to become role models for society as well. The right combination of knowledge, science, wisdom and academics are important, but so are life skills that give us the emotional quotient to make life more meaningful. You cannot progress in life or career by ignoring these soft skills. Then progress will become imbalanced.”

Later Dr Sengar spent time with the students to inspect their science/technical models and interacted with the budding engineers to understand the idea behind their models.

Students from Faculty of Science – Engineering and Faculty of Computer Science participated in this fest. Some of the models created by students groups are – smart home, highway technology, rain water harvesting, wastage collection, waste plastic road, green building, smart city Ranchi, light fidelity communication, treatment of sea water, save water in poly house, automatic human counter and light control system, service robot, and eco-friendly cycle.

Later, University faculty members, staff and students from various departments came along to view the models and encourage the participants. The entire Tech Fest 2019 was organized under the mentorship of Prof. Raghuvansh Singh.

SUCCESSFUL MBA STUDENT RANCHI KUNAL PRASAD

KUNAL PRASAD, MBA STUDENT, JRU, SHARES AN INTERESTING ARTICLE HE READ

Have you ever solved the Rubik’s Cube? For those who don’t know what Rubik’s Cube is, here is a brief about it.

The Rubik’s cube (please see the image below) was invented in 1974 by Erno Rubik, a Hungarian architect. However, it was never meant to be a toy. Erno just wanted a working model to help explain three-dimensional geometry.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RANCHI JRU
The cube, made up of nine coloured squares on each side, can be rearranged in 43 quintillion different ways. That is 43,000,000,000,000,000,000.

Across the world, several “speed cubing” competitions are held, where people try to solve the cube as quickly as possible. This is no simple task. Why? Because the cube has completion paths numbering in the billions but only one goal state — each of six sides displaying a solid color — which apparently can’t be found through random moves. The current world record for solving the cube is held by Yusheng Du, who can solve it at an amazing 3.47 seconds.

That’s good enough. Eh!

Interestingly I came across this article on artificial intelligence by University of California, Irvine. They have created DeepCubeA. It is an artificial intelligence system created by researchers at the University.

It is a ‘a deep reinforcement learning algorithm programmed by UC Irvine computer scientists and mathematicians that can find the solution in a fraction of a second without any specific domain knowledge or in-game coaching from humans’. Moreover, this AI takes about 20 moves, most of the time solving Rubik’s Cube in the minimum number of steps.

The research is published in Nature Machine Intelligence. The researchers in the study demonstrated that DeepCubeA solved 100 percent of all test configurations, finding the shortest path to the goal state for Rubik’s cube about 60 percent of the time.

Therefore, the algorithm also works on other combinatorial games such as the sliding tile puzzle, Lights Out and Sokoban.

Senior author Pierre Baldi, UC Irvine distinguished professor of computer science is the man behind this AI. Baldi is involved in projects that research to build the next generation of AI systems.

People across the world are touched by artificial intelligence every day through apps such as Siri and Alexa. Besides, recommendation engines working behind the scenes of their favourite online services prompt suggestions and links that are based on your search history.
(This was an interesting article for me and I thought of sharing it with my friends at the campus.)

CULTIVATING THE RARE NONI – PRASENJIT, ENTREPRENEUR, B.SC AGRICULTURE STUDENT, JRU ALUMNI, RANCHI

It takes courage to choose a different path in life. Young Prasenjit, a student of Jharkhand Rai University (JRU) trained in B.Sc Agriculture has chosen a different entrepreneurship journey.

No. He is not doing something with the digital or technology, like other entrepreneurs today. He is applying his agriculture knowledge to cultivate noni fruit, an indigenous plant found in coastal regions.

Besides, when Prasenjit started his journey, he knew that the road he has chosen will be difficult, because in India the noni plant grows wild in the coastal areas of Orissa, Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Andaman and Nicobar  Islands has the highest naturally  grown populations of noni plants. But, Prasenjit is farming noni in Kasmaar district, Bokaro, which is in central India.

Moreover, given the climatic conditions of Bokaro region, it is difficult to grow noni in Kasmaar district.

WHY DID HE CHOOSE TO CULTIVATE NONI?

Here’s why Prasenjit chose to cultivate Noni.

Noni, also known as Indian mulberry,  awl tree,  cheese fruit,  nino,  nona has immense medicinal potential. The tree is known  as  ‘Ach’  in  Hindi.  Moreover, the  plant  has  been  known  as  a medicinal and wellness plant for more than 2000  years.

However, currently noni is  an  endangered plant  and is listed in the Red Data Book.

Noni fruit juice is a health and wellness drink. Fruits and leaves are used for  preparation  of  different  nutraceuticals.  Though the  fruit  is  not  edible  as  such.  You have to process to consume noni fruit.

Approximately three kilos of noni  fruits  when processed will yield  1.0  kg  noni juice.

It is considered to be an immuno-modulator plant in its activity on man. Noni is effective against a wide array of diseases such as type-2 diabetes, arthritis,  filariasis,  skin  infections.  In fact, noni  has  a  positive influence  on AIDS treatment. Research shows that noni is  non-toxic to blood, blood elements  and also to vital organs such as lever and kidney and has a broad range of therapeutic effects such as analgesic,   anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive,  immune-enhancing,  anti-cancer, anti-bacterial, anti-viral,  anti-fungal,  anti-tuberculous,  anti-protozoal,  anti-oxidant  anti-stress  and  sedative effects. These effects of noni has made it a popular health enhancer and food supplement world wide.

CULTIVATING NONI IN BOKARO

In February this year, he procured 50 noni plants from Odisha and planted in one acre field. Out of these, only 17 trees survived to bear fruit. From these trees, he now plans to expand his cultivation.

Prasenjit says, ‘Noni seeds are sold in the market for Rs800 per kilo.’

He is the first person in Bihar, Jharkhand and North India to be cultivating this plant in his village. His efforts has surprised the locals.

Enterprising efforts run in his family. His father Vivekananda, back in 2005 had cultivated spirulina in this region, surprising everyone with his produce. His mother is a famous medicinal practitioner. Their family nursery grows several unconventional plants and fruits that include – red-lady papaya, aloe vera, night-flowering jasmine (harshingaar in Hindi), dragon fruit and others Being different and unconventional is what makes an entrepreneur after all. And Prasenjit is proving it to be true.

Using an Arduino Uno board and connecting it with fire sensors, the robot can detect temperatures as they rise. The robot gets activated as soon as the temperature crosses a certain mark. Guided by its ultrasonic sensors, it then reaches the place of fire and activates the fire extinguishing systems. Because, this robot is equipped with a navigation system it can make its way through obstructions in path. In case of fire, the system guides the robot to reach the zone of high temperature caused by fire. A robot like this is enormously useful in handling fire at places where it is difficult for humans to reach easily.

IBTESHAM SUCCESS STORY STUDENT JRU 2

IBTESHAM SUCCESS STORY STUDENT JRU 1
