Ability to Process Information – That’s right! To understand a case, remember all the facts and logically present it in the court so that you can win the case – is a skill you need for the law profession. All lawyers must be able to gather large information at a time, organize it, and understand it on the spot. When a case is in session, questions will be asked and good lawyers should be able to interpret and respond to them appropriately.

Responsiveness – Even when it gets tedious, are you willing to devote your time to a client or a case?  This is a skill. A good lawyer should respond to his clients or anyone else involved in a case. Not being readily available as often as possible can result in a failed case because the information the client wants to provide is crucial to winning the case.

Research and Investigation Skills – Yes, to be a successful lawyer, you need enormous patience to research and investigate information related to a case. Finding appropriate information in books or the Web in a short period of time needs certain skills. A lawyer’s opinion alone does not stand up in court, so it must be backed with facts. As a future lawyer, be ready to research, use online resources, research regulations, and judicial opinions to back your cases.

Speaking Skills – Can you present your thoughts logically and convincingly? If the answer is YES, then you should STUDY LAW. All lawyers must be able to speak clearly and concisely. Putting your points across to the judges is a must have skill for a good lawyer.

Listening Skills – Being able to patiently listen to your client, understand the story, make logical deductions basis what you are hearing, and giving appropriate inputs after listening – all these come under listening skills. Without listening skills, the lawyer will miss pertinent information. For the strongest case possible, the lawyer must understand every aspect of the case and look at it from all angles.
